Hello.  In regards to the use of the term "fatherland" or chokuk/jokuk, 
linguistically, it is tied to how the North Koreans, supported by the former 
Soviet Union and China, which both used these terms, thought and thinks of 
war.
However, if you look at mother tongue in Korean, they use the work "mokuko" 
which literally means mother country's language. So it depends on what is 
being discussed and who is leading the discussion (a North Korean or South 
Korean).
