While much of the romantic comedies/romantic melodramas are virtually
interchangeable, students might benefit from portrayals of those whose
lives are a bit off the beaten track, such that they can come to know a
Korea beyond the starlets, tough guys and "sassy girls."

Please Take Care of My Cat - 2001
http://www.koreanfilm.org/kfilm01.html#cat
A delicately textured portrayal of young women graduates from a
commercial high school in Incheon, starring the fabulously unfabulous
Bae Doona.

If You Were Me - 2003
http://www.koreanfilm.org/kfilm03.html#ifyou
An omnibus production portraying different types of discrimination in
Korean society, addressing gender, class, and race, among others.

Too Young to Die - 2002

Breaking taboos, this film embraces the vibrant sex lives of two
elderly Koreans.

In addition, there are two _excellent_ films about male homosexuality
that I can not recommend strongly enough. These are especially
effective in challenging stereotypical notions of Korean masculinity.

Road Movie - 2002

This film depicts life on the skids, following the improbable, yet
captivating, relationship between a tender but rugged "king of the
tramps" and an ex-stockbroker, way down on his luck, as they travel
across the country.

Broken Branches - 1995

Great not only for its incredibly rich depiction of gay male love, this
film captures decades of modern Korean history from the perspective of
the cast-off children of a cranky yangban's fourth wife.

Enjoy~
