Korean Reference Librarian, Asian Library, University of British Columbia
The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest research
libraries in Canada. It is a depository library for publications of the
governments of BC, Canada, and elsewhere. The University of British
Columbia is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on the city's
West Side of Point Grey. The University Endowment Lands are situated to the
east of the campus proper, and serve as a green belt between the city and
the campus.
Only 30 minutes from the heart of downtown Vancouver, the spectacular
University of British Columbia campus is a must see for any visitor to the
city. The University boasts some of the city's finest attractions,
including the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Arts, and the
UBC Botanical Garden.
Overview of the position:
Provides reference, information services and collection development in
support of Korean studies. Assumes responsibility for liaison with
scholars working with Korean language materials. Provides instruction and
assistance in the use of information resources. Routinely works with
technical services staff on issues related to Korean language materials.
Catalogues Korean language materials as required. Participates in
selection, configuration and presentation of electronic resources in Korean
languages. Participates in the development of library policy, procedures,
and services as required.
Qualifications and requirements:
A graduate degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited
program, an academic background in Korean history and literature, and good
working knowledge of Korean and English are required. Familiarity with the
bibliography of Korean language material is essential. Strong written and
oral communication skills are required. Demonstrated knowledge of AACR2,
LCSH, LC Classification, USMARC, and LC/CanMarc formats are required and
experience in using RLIN/OCLC is desirable. Knowledge of the
McCune-Reischauer romanization systems is essential. Evening and weekend
work is required.
Terms of Appointment:
This is a continuing position. If eligible and qualified, the successful
applicant may be appointed with a confirmed appointment. Otherwise, there
will be an initial three-year probationary appointment. Normally, such an
appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of appointment, and a
recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed
appointment.
Salary:
Commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
