UC Santa Barbara announces a new Ph.D. program in East Asian  
Languages and Cultural Studies for students concentrating on Chinese  
or Japanese, starting Fall 2007.  The program will train students in  
advanced language and transdisciplinary studies across the humanities  
and social sciences.  Specializations offered include cultural  
studies, cinema and the performing arts, literati culture, Taiwan  
literature, Buddhist studies, Chinese language pedagogy, translation  
studies and Early Modern Japanese cultural studies.  Program faculty  
include those in East Asian as well as History, Art History,  
Comparative Literature, Drama, and Religious Studies.  Instruction in  
Korean and Tibetan is also offered.  Fellowships are available  
through Title VI FLAS funding and other sources.  To ensure  
consideration for financial aid, applications should be received by
