Job Description for 2008 Art History Search

 

The Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University in Tokyo, an institution
founded on Christian principles of education, invites applications for an
open-rank position in the area of Asian art history or Asian visual culture.
The position will be part of the Comparative Culture Program, which also
includes literature, philosophy and religion, in the Faculty of Liberal Arts
beginning in Spring 2008. 

Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph. D. by the time of
appointment and to demonstrate a capacity to teach and conduct research in a
comparative perspective, which may include issues of cross-cultural and
interdisciplinary contacts. Candidates who are able to offer courses in
Korean art history or visual culture are particularly encouraged to apply.
Although expertise may be held in any period, commitment to teaching Asian
art and culture broadly and comparatively is essential (courses such as
Asian art and literature, Asian art and religion). The candidate will be
expected to contribute to the core program by teaching a section in Critical
Thinking. The language of instruction is English. Japanese language ability
and professional or scholarly experience in Japan would be assets. The
candidate must be willing to participate in department and university
administration and activities.  

The appointment will be effective from either April 1 or October 1, 2008.

research interests, teaching ability, and reasons for the applicant's
interest in seeking employment in Japan), a curriculum vitae, the names and
addresses of three referees, and a brief description of courses the
applicant has taught or would be prepared to develop. All applications
