A further inequity faced by language lecturers in the UC system is the  
lack of UC sponsorship for "permanent residence" status. This holds  
even in the case of those granted "permanent lecturer" positions.  
Non-citizen program directors and permanent lecturers, those who have  
devoted themselves to their students and to the university for years,  
are thus placed in a very ambiguous, unfair, and demoralizing position.
