Dear friends and colleagues,

The consultants McKinsey have just released a study called:

_South Korea: Finding its place on the world stage_
(http://e.mckinseyquarterly.com/17d49411alayfousibglvosiaaaaaatxjv4kb6i44eqyaaaaa)

The link, in case it doesn't work automatically, is:

rea_Finding_its_place_on_the_world_stage_2577_
(https://www.mckinseyquarterly.com/Economic_Studies/Country_Reports/South_Korea_Finding_its_place_on_the_
world_stage_2577)

The articles available are as below*. While short, and
intended primarily for non-Korea specialists, they may
be useful to those teaching Korean economy and business.

This is evidently part of a larger project:

Over the past year, as part of McKinsey’s work with an international
advisory council to the president of South Korea, we convened more than two
dozen renowned business leaders, academics, and policy makers to share their
views on the country’s options for the future. The result was a book, Korea
2020: Global Perspectives for the Next Decade, published by Random House
Korea. These five essays have been selected from that volume.

While such provenance may carry a whiff of puffery,
these essays do have academic interest imho.
(This despite an astonishing geographical howler
- not involving Korea - in the contents list below...)

Surprisingly, I could find no clue on how to obtain the book.
Googling the title suggests it is only available in Korea
- which surely rather defeats the purpose of the exercise.

*You have to register at McKinsey's site. This is free, not too
tiresome, and gives access to a wealth of other materials too.
Again, students of business and economics may find this useful.

Many thanks to Neil Drewitt, who drew it to our attention.

May Day greetings,
Aidan FC

During the four decades following the Korean War, South Korea evolved from
one of the most abject states in the region to one of the most vibrant.
But despite the country’s remarkable successes, it remains largely unknown to
outsiders. The country is now poised at a critical juncture, and this
package of five essays explores both its present and its future. Share
