International Conference on
Climate change and Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) as a solution for the EUMENA
(Europe, Middle East, North Africa) and Northeast Asian region – perspectives
for Korea’s energy policy

With the commitments and peer pressure resulting from the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen last December, the search
for renewable energy sources which are economically viable became a priority for
Europe and Korea and its Northeast Asian neighbours. At the same time, the
diversification of energy sources remains an important task due to the expected
steadily increasing demand for energy.

The generation of concentrated solar power through large-scale
plants in desert areas promises to achieve the provision of clean, cheap and
inexhaustible energy in the future. However, successful application of CSP
technology on a large-scale needs an important amount of policy coordination and
institutionalization in energy policy. The DESERTEC idea is to integrate energy
grids of population and industry centres with desert areas ideal to generate
solar-thermal energy. Given the right framework in terms of energy policy and
political cooperation, for the EUMENA region (Europe, the Middle East, North
Africa) as well as for Northeast Asia (China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula and
Mongolia) this promises to be a major way to tackle the challenges of climate
change, energy security and fostering regional integration.

The Gobitec Initiative Research Network promotes the idea of energy
cooperation in Northeast Asia through an integrated network for renewable
energies with a particular focus on CSP technology. In the EUMENA region, the
countries participating in the Desertec project already started to build
large-scale CSP plants and integration of European energy policy is progressing
fast. It is our pleasure to invite you to a conference bringing together experts
from Europe, Northeast Asia and Korea to discuss the potential of “electricity
from the desert” for Europe and Northeast Asia. The conference will take place
at the Grand Hilton Hotel on December 8, 2010. We would sincerely appreciate
your presence and active participation in this important discussion. Thank you.
