Dear Colleagues,

We would like to inform you of this upcoming event at the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Seoul National University. For the Colloquium series on Korean Studies, we are pleased to have Prof. Hagen Koo as our next speaker.

Title: 글로벌시대 한국 계급질서의 재구성 / Recomposition of Class Order in Korea in the Global Age

Abstract: The Korean class order is a product of the past 40 years of rapid industrialization, but is undergoing significant changes as a result of the current neo-liberal globalization process. The existing, traditional classes are undergoing a process of internal division, and under the new economic paradigm they are showing signs of realignment. Moreover, because of the globalized consumer and education market, the lines distinguishing classes are evolving rapidly. The goal of this paper is to analyze these changes and discuss their social, political, and cultural implications.

Presenter: Prof. Hagen Koo is professor in sociology at the University of Hawai'i and is currently also a Kyujanggak fellow for the year 2010. His books include Korean Workers: The Culture and Politics of Class Formation, and State and Society in Contemporary Korea.

** the paper will be delivered in Korean, but an English outline will be available and the discussion will take place in Korean and English **

Where: Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies (SNU building #102), seminar room (ground floor)

When: Thursday 21 October, 4-6 PM
