I'd like to invite you to come join me and fellow writers, artists and
fellow Korea Society staff and members for an evening of cocktails, reading
and discussion with renowned writer, Wesley Yang, for the launching of The
Korea Society's first ever Young Professionals Series.
On a personal note, Wesley Yang is one of my favorite contemporary writers
today. He's a contributing editor of *New York Magazine*, as well as *n+1*,
a terrific literary magazine, where, in 2008, they published Yang's essay,
"The Face of Seung Hui Cho: Virginia Tech and us." I'm sure everyone's
already familiar with his tremendous article issued in *New York Magazin*e
earlier this summer entitled "Paper Tigers."
RSVP is required, so please do so by emailing The Young Professionals Series
programmer Claudia Pak at claudia.ny at koreasociety.org. This event is
happening at Art Gate next Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
Please forward this along to any friends who might be interested in
attending.
Hope to see you there.
Warmest regards,
Grace

Young Professionals’ Kick-Off : An Evening with Wesley Yang, Writer and
Author of Paper Tigers
*“Sometimes I’ll glimpse my reflection in a window and feel astonished by
what I see. Jet-black hair. Slanted eyes. A pancake-flat surface of
yellow-and-green-toned skin. An expression that is nearly reptilian in its
impassivity. I’ve contrived to think of this face as the equal in beauty to
any other. But what I feel in these moments is its strangeness to me. It’s
my face. I can’t disclaim it. But what does it have to do with me?”* - from
Paper Tigers
Join us at ArtGate Gallery for an informal evening of conversation with Wesley
Yang, author of the recent New York Magazine article Paper
Tigers<http://nymag.com/news/features/asian-americans-2011-5/>
, a provocative response to Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Learn
more about Yang’s thought-provoking and controversial perspective on Asian
stereotypes, the dynamics of the “bamboo ceiling,” and participate in a
lively discussion.
A cocktail reception, kicking-off our new Young Professionals’ Network will
follow. Discover artists from across the United States, China, and South
Korea through ArtGate Gallery’s current Summer Kaleidoscope exhibition and
socialize over Korean-inspired hors d’oeuvres and trendy tea-infused
cocktails from Tavalon.
