Call for Papers: Seventh Worldwide Consortium of
Korean Studies Centers Workshop

The Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers invites proposals from graduate students for papers to be presented at its Seventh International Workshop on Korean Studies. The workshop, on the theme “Cross-fertilization and Synergy: Exchanging Ideas on Theory and Method in Korean Studies,” will be held June 6–8, 2011, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, part of the University of London, United Kingdom.

The Worldwide Consortium of Korean Studies Centers workshops are designed to provide a forum for graduate students in Korean studies to share their research in a supportive and encouraging environment and to promote scholarly interest in Korea around the globe.

Participating graduate students will give presentations on topics of their choice related to the workshop theme in a series of thematically or methodologically coherent panels chaired by established academics drawn from the region and from Consortium member universities.

Twelve graduate students will be chosen through open competition to present papers. Twelve additional graduate students nominated by Consortium member universities also will be selected to participate. Any graduate student specializing in Korean studies, including those enrolled in non-Consortium institutions, may apply for an invitation to the workshop. Preference will be given to students enrolled in doctoral programs.

Graduate students from institutions outside the UK who are selected to take part in the workshop will be eligible for funding assistance. This assistance will cover accommodations and meals during the workshop, as well as a significant portion of travel expenses.

Workshop theme:
Recently the field of Korean Studies has grown in size and scope with an increasing number of young researcher working on a ever-widening array of topics, and for this workshop participating students will be asked to not only present their research topic, but also to discuss surrounding theoretical and methodological issues with the hope that this will provide points of contacts between seemingly unrelated topics, facilitate cross-fertilization and synergy, and contribute towards the further development of Korean Studies as a discipline.

Application process:
Applications must be received by March 31, 2011, and must include a title, an abstract (500 words maximum, in English or Korean), contact information, and a curriculum vitae.
