Call for Nominations: AAS NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau

In fall 2011 the Northeast Asia Council (NEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) will launch a new NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau. This program will support public presentations by senior scholars in Japanese and Korean studies at American colleges and universities, especially those without well-established programs on East Asia. The NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau will be supported by funds generously provided by the Japan-United States Friendship Commission and the Korea Foundation. NEAC is now seeking nominations (including self nominations) for scholars who will serve as presenters for this new speakers bureau

NEAC plans to select 10-15 senior scholars in a range of disciplines in Japanese and Korean studies as NEAC Distinguished Speakers for 2011-2014. Each of these scholars will provide a short biography and summaries of three public lectures, based on their research on Japan or Korea, that they would be willing to present. This information will be posted on the AAS website and publicized in venues like the AAS Asian Studies Newsletter and H-Net listservs. Colleges and universities will be able to apply to host a NEAC Distinguished Speaker of their choice as part of the regular, biannual NEAC grant application process (with February 1st and October 1st application deadlines). Priority will be given to institutions that have only a small group of Japanese or Korean studies faculty and are far from major centers of East Asian studies. Each speaker would be expected to give at least one formal lecture as well as meet with classes and interact extensively
with host faculty and their students while on campus. NEAC would fund the honorarium and air travel for the NEAC Distinguished Speaker and the host institution would be responsible for all local costs (food, lodging, marketing, etc.).

NEAC seeks nominations of scholars in Japanese and Korean studies for its inaugural NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau. We welcome nominations of senior scholars (full or advanced associate professors, independent scholars with established records of publication) in all disciplines and in all time periods who specialize in Japan or Korea. We are particularly interested in scholars who are strong public speakers and who can present lectures that are accessible to a general audience and are based on the latest research in Japanese and Korean studies.

Nominations should consist of the name and full contact information of the nominee as well as a short statement (no more than 200 words) of the nominee's qualifications for the NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau, including scholarly record and speaking skills. NEAC will contact nominees directly to confirm their interest in participation in the program and to seek additional information.

Self nominations are welcome and should consist of full contact information, a current CV, and the titles and short descriptions (no more than 100 words each) of the three public lectures which the self-nominee would be interested in presenting as a member of the NEAC Distinguished Speakers Bureau.

Nominations and self nominations are due by March 1, 2011 and should be sent electronically (in pdf or MS Word format) to the NEAC Chair, William M. Tsutsui, btsutsui at smu.edu
