The following, in turn, is the draft of the entry for Lee's dissertation that will appear in my nearly completed "Century of Doctoral Dissertations on Korea, 1903-2004: An Annotated Bibliography":

LEE, Ann Sung-hi (1959- ).
Yi Kwangsu and Early Modern Korean Literature. Columbia University [United States], 1991 (Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures). Chairperson-Major Adviser: Gari K. Ledyard. 2, i, 310p. DAI [Dissertation Abstracts International] 55, no.3 (Sept. 1994): 570-71-A; UMI [formerly University Microfilms International] order number 9421369.
Written by his granddaughter, this study of the pioneering novelist Yi Kwang-su (1892-1950?) (Yi Gwang-su/Lee Gwang-su/Lee Kwangsu) sought to clarify his "literary work and its significance through an analysis of early twentieth-century Korean literature and his own writings between 1910 and 1917". Focusing on Mujông (1917) (Mujeong), Lee (B.A., Harvard University, 1980 and M.A., Columbia University, 1983) devoted much of her dissertation to "Yi's first novel in terms of the central theme of mujông ('without emotion, without love')", "examined how Mujông depicted spiritual growth as the experience of love", "explained how the novel was significant in its introduction of an irony subversive of the principal characters in a novel", and discussed nationalism in Mujông in the wake of Korea's annexation by Japan. In earlier chapters, she explored "issues of language and style" in late Chosôn (Joseon) period literature and dealt with the "novel of domestic intrigue, a popular literary genre" of that time. Lee concluded by "relating Yi's early work to some of the problematic issues in his controversial later writings". "A biographical essay sketches Yi Kwang-su's childhood and early youth in Korea, Japan, and China".
Contents: Introduction. 1. The Language of Early Modern Korean Literature. 2. Korean Literature in the Period 1905 to 1910. 3. Escape from the Inner Room: The Novel of Domestic Intrigue in Early Modern Korean Literature. 4. Yi Kwangsu: The Early Years (1892 to 1917). 5. Language in the Early Writings of Yi Kwangsu. 6. Mujông. 7. Love and Compassion in Mujông. 8. Irony in Mujông. 9. Nationalism in Mujông. Conclusion. Bibliography: pp.278-96. Appendix: pp.297-310.
Published as Yi Kwang-su and Modern Korean Literature: Mujông, by Ann Sung-hi Lee. Ithaca, N.Y.: East Asia Program, Cornell University, 2005. vii, 375p. (Cornell East Asia series, no.127).
Master's thesis: "Literary Parody in the Koryô Dynasty: The Kajôn", by Ann Sung-hi Lee. M.A. in East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University, 1983. [pagination unknown]

Subject: [KS] Modern Korean Literature

Dear members,
I would like to ask if anybody knows the other works of
Ann Sung-hi Lee, besides the book “Yi Gwang-su and Modern
Korean Literature: Mujong” (2005) and article “The Early
Writings of Yi Gwang-su” in Korean Journal (2002)?
Could you please tell me where I can find these works? Or
how it is possible to contact Prof. Lee?
