[KS] Jazz in Korea--Josephine Baker

As I read through this story which Mr. Hoffman so kindly e-mailed to
the list, I cannot help but remember the famous words which another
Hoffmann (E.T.A.) said to von Ranke one unforgettably beautiful day in
Goettingen: "when the only source for an event is also an elaborate
reflection on the uncertain boundary between memory and fiction, do
not assume that the event is something that "actually happened.' " ^^


More seriously, it is at fascinating, although also at times
frustrating, how easily fictional accounts can be assimilated into
seemingly sober histories. I have noticed stories late Choson
private accounts which are clearly described as hearsay ( ??)but which  
are then moved into more sober narratives with those vital two
characters removed. Another good example is the story of Non'gae as
analyzed by the historian Jung Jiyoung, in which a story locally
important in Chinju was reproduced and expanded through the
interaction between local elites and the Choson court. The fictional
Sambong Island discussed by Hejtmanek, and the memories of the
Japanese and Manchu invasions discussed by Saeyoung Park in her
dissertation, are also fascinating examples.
