*“**The Art of **Resist**ance on **Jeju, Island of Peace” *

Since 2007, the villagers of Gangjeong on Jeju Island have been waging
fierce resistance against the construction of a massive naval base. In 2006,
the South Korean government had officially designated this stunningly
beautiful island as the "Island of Peace." But it now aims to build a naval
base there that would host twenty warships and two Aegis destroyers linked
to the US Missile Defense System. The base will significantly impact this
pristine UNESCO-designated World Natural Heritage site. The base will also
fuel a growing arms race with China. Gangjeong residents and activists have
used every democratic means to stop the base construction, but the South
Korean government has been intensifying its crackdown. It recently
dispatched more than 1,000 riot police to forcibly remove and arrest the
protesters.

Art Talk: *Koh Gillchun*, a renowned Korean artist whose art and activism
are deeply rooted in the history of Jeju Island, will talk about his art and
the struggle in Gangjeong.

In Solidarity: *Gloria Steinem*, writer and feminist activist, will talk
about why the Gangjeong villagers’ resistance has inspired peace and
environmental activists around the world.
