Dear Mr. Sasse,

I had no idea West Germany bought American tanks that were previously used in Asia.
Indeed, the topic of the Korean War - the U.S. - Europe deserves a separate colloquium, and there is a lot to explore, from politics to ideology to culture.
Maybe it is just a trifle, but only recently I have learned that, while the Communist Bloc countries were actively supporting North Korea in the conflict, Polish bitniks (bikiniarze, an equivalent to the American Beat Generation) particularly fancied American military bomber jackets from the Korean War, some of them still having badges with names of their previous owners. Taking into account that such "improperly dressed" subcultures were particularly hated by the communist government of Poland (it was read as political subversion), and one could get reprimanded by the militia for wearing, for example, colourful socks, here we have one more, small-scale ideological conflict.

Best regards,

A. Smiatacz

Just a shot note: the American Army downgraded their commitment in Europe and so the FRG, which was supposed to be demilitarized, got an army, a major change in the German-European-American theatre... I believe that was the last step to 100% souverenity.
And when the Korean War was over, Germany bought used tanks (and maybe other stuff?) Anyway, I was in a tank unit and we received tanks which showed traces of warfare (even holes from impact...)
Best
Werner

Somewhat short notice but that is not unusual.

Odd however, that there is no mention of
the rest of the world. Europe (East and West) was very much affected by the Korean
War ? Britain lost 1000 in the war. Poland, East Germany and other
Eastern countries were major suppliers of assistance during and after the war.
No Japanese scholars? The United Nations and the Korean war seems to be totally
missing.
