Through the support of the Korea Foundation, the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in Modern Korean Studies, anticipated to start in Fall 2013. Candidates should specialize in any of the following areas: Korean digital media, cultural studies related to media, or literature/cinema/performance. The ability to teach or conduct research across several of these areas will be viewed positively, and transnational or comparative research anchored in Korean materials will receive strong consideration. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in hand or expected by August 2013. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a strong research profile while teaching a variety of courses, including a gateway course on Korean culture and history as well as topical undergraduate courses and graduate-level seminars. Applicants should also be prepared to supervise independent student research at the undergraduate, M.A., and Ph.D. levels, and to contribute to the service demands of the Department of Asian Studies and the University of Texas. Salary is competitive and dependent upon qualifications and experience. AA/EOE. The successful applicant will be required to undergo a background check. Interested applicants should submit (1) a letter of interest, including a discussion of research, teaching experience, and potential course offerings; (2) a detailed curriculum vitae; (3) an article or chapter-length writing sample; and (4) sample syllabi for at least two courses. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be submitted under separate cover.
