Assistant Professor in Korean Studies, Hong Kong University*

Applications are invited for appointment as *Assistant Professor in 
Korean Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC)*, 
from July 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter on a mutually agreed 
date, on a three-year fixed-term basis. This appointment is not on the 
tenure track.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree or equivalent that focuses on 
any aspect of Korean society, history, politics or culture by the date 
of appointment.  The appointee will join the new, interdisciplinary 
Korean Studies program that is building from our existing Korean 
Language minor.  Applicant should have a demonstrated capacity to 
develop and teach courses that explore Korea in an interdisciplinary 
mode and in the context of Korea’s increasing global impact and 
engagement.  A willingness and capacity to teach courses that connect to 
at least _one_ of the following would be favorably considered: (a) 
another of the School’s Area Studies programmes; and (b) the emerging 
programme in Global Creative Industries.  Capacity to work in English 
and Korean is fundamental to the position.  The successful candidate is 
expected to develop a vigorous, independent research programme, to excel 
in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to participate in the 
administration of the program.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and 
experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical 
benefits. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and 
University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to
