Gender and Politics in Contemporary Korea

Gender plays an important role in shaping relations of power, inequality, and authority in contemporary Korea. In addition to long-standing issues such as employment discrimination, income disparity, sexual violence, and militarism, new and emerging issues such as migrant labor, intercultural marriages, and youth sexualities pose new challenges for understanding how gender gives shape and meaning to the workings of politics. Taking as a starting point that gender operates as a fundamental organizing principle in various arenas of social, political, economic, religious, and cultural life, this special issue invites cross-disciplinary approaches from scholars working at the intersection of Korean studies, feminist studies and the social sciences. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that address the persistence of gendered processes and outcomes in contemporary politics and activism, and contribute to an in-depth and broad coverage of the current state of gender scholarship. Suggested topics include electoral politics, social movements, sexual minorities, diasporic interventions, military conscription, femininities and masculinities, urban space and gentrification, legal contestations, care labor, etc. This thematic issue will be guest edited by Jennifer Jihye Chun and Ju Hui Judy Han.

Articles appearing in the JKS are abstracted and indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Sociological Abstracts, Social Services Abstracts, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, PAIS International, Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, Bibliography of Asian Studies, Historical Abstracts, and America: History and Life.

JKS is a peer-reviewed journal and all papers will be vetted by two outside readers.
