What a tragic news!
Karoly was a Koreanologist and a diplomat, but above all he was a great person and a very, very true-hearted firend.
Rest in peace, Karoly. We will miss you.

Subject: [KS] Károly Fendler
Dear KS list members,
I have received the sad news from Budapest that Dr. Károly Fendler has passed away on 17th February 2013. He was one of the first Hungarian diplomats who spent time in North Korea from the 1950s. We have met regularly in Vienna once or twice a year until last autumn, and it was always instructive and inspiring, often also entertaining to hear his insider's stories about the North Korean leadership. He remained committed to Korea and Korean Studies until his last days. Károly's enthusiasm for his research, his willingness to share, his deep insights and good sense of humor will be missed greatly.
