PhD and MA Scholarships for Korean Studies at the University of Auckland


The University of Auckland Korean Studies Program in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for two PhD and two Master of Arts (MA) scholarships in Korean Studies funded by the Academy of Korean Studies. Applications in all areas of Korean Studies will be considered but applicants specialising in the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply:  Anthropology and Ethnomusicology, Korean Diaspora Studies, Political Studies.

1. Master of Arts (MA) Scholarships

Each scholarship includes fees cover of up to $30,000 per annum for up to two years for international Masters students, or a fees contribution plus an annual stipend of NZ$10,000. 
The scholarships  are tenable by international or domestic students for a one or two year MA programme in the Faculty of Arts, commencing late February 2014. Successful applicants must meet the entry criteria for the two year MA in their disciplinary area, which includes strong results in a qualification equivalent to a New Zealand Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in the relevant disciplinary area and demonstrated proficiency in Korean sufficient to carry out research. Continuation into the second year of study is dependent on the successful completion of the first year at the required academic standard and the intention to undertake research on a topic relating to Korea.

Applicants must submit a completed application form to the Scholarships Office by 1 October 2013. Applications will include:
•	A curriculum vitae
•	Details of three referees
•	A list of intended courses for the first year of study (for applicants enrolling for a 2 year MA) or a 1,000 word research proposal (for applicants with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree or equivalent, who are enrolling for the one year MA by research only)
•	University transcripts

2. PhD Scholarships

Each scholarship includes doctoral fees for up to three years plus an annual stipend of NZ$25,000. 

The scholarships  are tenable for three years and can be taken up on the first day of any month by agreement up to and including 1 February 2014. Renewal into the second and third years of study is dependent on the successful completion of the preceding year of study.  Successful applicants must meet the entry criteria for doctoral study in their disciplinary area, including a completed Masters or Bachelors Honours degree, preferably with first honours, and a demonstrated ability to pursue doctoral level research.
