I hope list members might find this interesting.

On Saturday November 9 a group met informally and decided that there was sufficient interest to justify setting up an RAS Colloquium in Korean Studies in Seoul.

The RAS Colloquium would be associated with the Royal Asiatic Society by name but it would be open without obligation of RAS membership to everyone currently in Korea engaged in Korean Studies using English as a language of writing / publication, whether academically as teacher or student, or as a freelance amateur. Its main aim would be to offer a space where such people could meet together, get to know each other, hear and discuss presentations made by one or two members, and share information that might be of interest. Meetings would usually last about 2 - 3 hours, once a month.

The ad hoc steering committee is composed of :
Kathryn Weathersby,
Boudewijn Walraven
Robert Fouser
Michael Kim
Matt VanVolkenburg
Werner Sasse

If the Colloquium proves attractive, it might be possible to organize a longer Symposium from time to time. Members of this list who are or will be in Seoul and who are interested in such gatherings should contact me for inclusion in the mailing list. The first meeting with presentations will be held on the afternoon of Saturday December 7. We will then decide whether to meet during the winter or not. Please also do not hesitate to share this with colleagues or students who might be interested.

Brother Anthony
President, RAS Korea
