Dear Colleagues,

I would like to bring to the attention of the Korean Studies community my
new book about proletarian culture, which might otherwise fall under the
radar of many Koreanists.

*Recasting Red Culture in Proletarian Japan: Childhood, Korea and the
Historical Avant-garde *(
http://www.uhpress.hawaii.edu/p-9136-9780824838935.aspx) shows how
proletarian writers and activists in the 1920s and 1930s reconfigured
culture into a vital social practice, opening up new critical spaces in the
intersections of class, childhood, popular culture, gender and ethnicity. With
over a dozen translated fairy tales, poems, and short stories woven into
the narrative, the book examines the margins of the proletarian cultural
movement in order to redefine its center. Along the way it engages
significantly with questions about the representation of Korean activists
and the Korean colony within the context of revolutionary literature. It
happens to be heavily discounted now on various on-line sites.

Thanks very much.
