Position Overview       This is a two year fixed term contract with an option for a one year extension subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

The Department of Political and Social Change, located in the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, is a leading centre for research on the political and societal dynamics of Asian countries. The Department is seeking two outstanding scholars to conduct research on the domestic politics and society on one or more of the following countries, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam. The position is research-focused, but the apointee will also participate in the supervision of graduate and honours students, and seek external research funding as well as contribute to the Department's Undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, especially in the areas of North Asian and/or Southeast Asian politics, Asia Pacific comparative politics, research methods, and/or conflict studies. The appointment will be for two to three years.

The appointee will have a ph.D. in political science or related discipline, possess research experience in and publications on Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam, know the language(s) relevant to doing research there, have a track record of public outreach, and a research agenda compatible with the Department's interests. Along with a cover letter, CV and a list of referees, each applicant should submit a two-page prospectus detailing research plans for the period of the appointment.

Position description
Responsible to  Head, Political and Social Change
Role statement  Purpose Statement:

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region.

This is a position in the Department of Political and Social Change, which is part of the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies in the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. The Department of Political and Social Change is a leading international centre for research on domestic political and social dynamics in Asian countries, emphasising deep fieldwork-based research using vernacular languages of the region. The Department has a major commitment to PhD training as well as a rapidly expanding undergraduate and graduate teaching program.


Position Dimensions and Relationships:

The appointees will be located in the Department of Political and Social Change (PSC), School of International, Political and Strategic Studies (IPS), in the College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP). S/he will work under the supervision of the head of PSC.
The Research Fellow(s)/Fellow(s) in Asian Political and Social Change will make important contributions to the Department’s research, teaching, administration and outreach activities. The position will be research-focused, but the appointees will also play a role in developing courses in and teaching into the Department’s undergraduate program in the areas of Asia-Pacific Politics, Asia-Pacific Security, and/or Peace, Conflict and War Studies.


Role Statement (Levels C/B):

Under the broad direction of the Head, Department of Political and Social Change, the Research Fellow(s)/Fellow(s) will be expected to undertake the following roles:
1. The conduct and publication of research of internationally recognised quality on political and social change in one or more of the following countries: Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam;
2. Teaching in the undergraduate and Masters program of the Department, School and College, specifically in the Asia-Pacific Politics, Asia-Pacific Security and/or Peace, Conflict and War majors, and other programs as appropriate. This will involve:
• the preparation and delivery of courses on politics and social change in the Asia-Pacific, peace and conflict, and/or research methods:
• the preparation and delivery of tutorials, lectures, workshops, and seminars;
• acting as subject coordinator;
• initiation and development of course/subject material with appropriate advice from, and support of, more senior staff;
• marking and assessment;
• consultation with students;
3. Contribution to supervision of PhD, masters and honours students as appropriate;
4. Participation in public outreach activities associated with the academic’s research and teaching, including but not limited to media, government, academic and policy communities;
5. Attendance at departmental, school and or college meetings and/or membership of a number of committees; and
6. Other duties as allocated by the supervisor or the Vice-Chancellor consistent with the classification of the position.

Selection criteria
        SELECTION CRITERIA (Level B):

1. PhD (submitted or awarded) in political science or related discipline combined with substantial field research experience and relevant local language(s) in one or more of the following countries: Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam.
2. Demonstrated track record of undertaking high quality research on Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam as demonstrated through publications, with the potential to attract external funding for research projects and engage in collaborative research projects.
3. Demonstrated ability to undertake undergraduate teaching, especially in the areas of politics and society in Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam, comparative politics and/or peace, conflict and war in the Asia Pacific, and capacity to advise graduate students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
4. Demonstrated potential to engage in media and/or community outreach and/or of engagement with policy communities, government, the academic community, or the general public.
5. Capacity to establish and maintain effective relations with colleagues, professional staff, and students in the Department, School and University, and to contribute effectively to administrative and service tasks at the Departmental, School and College level.
6. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.

3. Demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and preparation of courses, especially in the areas of politics and society in Japan, Korea, Malaysia and/or Vietnam, comparative politics and/or peace, conflict and war in the Asia Pacific, and demonstrated capacity to supervise graduate students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
4. Demonstrated record of engaging in media and/or community outreach and/or of engagement with policy communities, government, the academic community, or the general public.
5. Capacity to establish and maintain effective relations with colleagues, professional staff, and students in the Department, School and University, and to contribute effectively to administrative and service tasks at the Departmental, School and College level.
6. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a university context.
