Neighboring Cinemas: Intersections
between Japanese and Korean Film Cultures

Japan and Korea are referred to as “close yet
distant neighbors” due to the history of Japanese colonialism in the first half
of the prior century and the banning of Japanese popular culture in South Korea
in the second half. However, the two
countries’ film histories are intertwined in a number of ways, from
co-productions during the colonial period (1910-45) to the recent phenomenon of
cross-cultural remakes and adaptations.

This panel aims to address the intersections between
Japanese and Korean film cultures from historical and contemporary perspectives. Possible topics include, but are not limited
to:

-
Colonial-era and contemporary film
co-productions

-
The representation of Japan/Japanese in
Korean films

-
The representation of Korea/Koreans in
Japanese films

-
The reconstruction of the colonial past
in recent Korean films

-
The reception of Korean Wave (Hallyu) stars
and their films in Japan

-
Cross-cultural remakes and adaptations

-
Influence of Japanese manga and anime in
Korean cinema

Selected papers will be considered for publication
in the Journal of Japanese and Korean
Cinema (recently re-launched under new editorship and publisher/Routledge).
Please email a 300-word abstract, preliminary bibliography, and short author
bio to the editors of the journal, Dr. Hye Seung Chung and Dr. David Scott
Diffrient at Journal_JKC at hotmail.com,
no later than August 5, 2014.
