[KS] Introducing Korean Name Romanizer

Thank you for posting it for me.

I'd like add a couple of note.
1. The tool is observing ALA-LC Korean Romanization Table, which is a revised version of McCune-Reischauer and a standard in library cataloging in North America.
2. It works only in a Windows PC. Unfortunately I can't make it working in MAC OS.

As you are undoubtedly aware of, it is sometimes quite difficult to apply the ALA-LC Korean Romanization Table correctly. In order to help with difficulties in romanizing personal names, I have developed the Korean Name Romanizer, a Windows-based tool that converts Korean names in Korean script into the roman alphabet according to ALA-LC rules.

You can freely download the tool on the Princeton EAL website at:

(The downloadable file is in .exe format, and some security systems may prevent proper downloading or installation. If this happens, please consult your system technician.)

I acknowledge here gladly the assistance of many Korean librarians who tested the tool and provided helpful feedback, in particular Erica Chang (Univ. of Hawaii) and Jee-young Park (Univ. of Chicago).

Features


·         The tool romanizes a highlighted Han’gŭl name, stores the romanized form on the clipboard, and, if in an applicable field, replaces the highlighted Han’gŭl with the corresponding romanized form.


·         It applies the rules of sound change according to the ALA-LC Romanization Table for Korean:
이덕무 => Yi Tŏng-mu
류성룡 => Yu Sŏng-nyong


·         It makes an effort to distinguish Sino-Korean names from names of native or western origin based on pronunciation. When ambiguity arises, a string is considered Sino-Korean and might need to be modified manually.


김빛나 => Kim Pinna
김쌔미 => Kim Ssaemi
김새미 => Kim Sae-mi (ambiguous)


·         If used in conjunction with OCLC Connexion, it enters correctly the breve symbol as the combining diacritic needed for MARC records



·         NOTE:
1) The tool is meant for romanizing personal names ONLY. It assumes that the given string is a personal name, and applies special rules accordingly.
            이재민 (personal name) => Yi Chae-min
            (The identical string 이재민 should be romanized as ijaemin if it were a common noun.)


2) Chinese characters are not romanized
하륜 > Ha Ryun
河崙 > Error

3) Non-Korean two-syllable family names are not recognized.
제갈량 => Chegal Ryang (諸葛 is a family name both in Chinese and Korean)
사마천 => Sa Ma-ch'ŏn (司馬 is a family name in Chinese, but not in Korean. The Chinese author 사마천 must be manually romanized as Sama Ch'ŏn)

4) In cataloging, a comma must be manually entered after the romanized last name in fields such as 6xx and 7xx.

5) The string to be romanized is always considered to start with a family name.
현빈 => Hyŏn Pin
현우 => Hyŏn U (There is an actor named 현우 with no family name. This actor’s name must be manually romanized as Hyŏnu)
