Just this ... before some sinologist steals the show ;)

(a) Politics, politics, politics: 
Mainland China accelerated the cash flow by reforming its economic 
system since in the early 1980s, so this was a political decision that 
came with economic benefits for everyone (except for the Taiwanese).

(b) On a technical level: 
You can match Wade-Giles to Pinyin 1 to 1:

That's not possible between McC-R and RR (on a 100% accuracy level).
