CALL FOR PAPERS
5th International Conference of NextGen Korean Studies Scholars (NEKST)
May 12-13, 2017 | Ann Arbor, MI

We invite graduate students within Korean studies across the humanities and
social sciences to participate in the 5th International Conference of
NextGen Korean Studies Scholars (NEKST) at the University of Michigan, Ann
Arbor. NEKST gives graduate students in all academic fields an opportunity
to present their research on Korea, share academic interests, and build a
community of future Korean studies scholars. Applicants from all
disciplines are welcome, as long as the topic is related to Korea.

Ushering in its fifth year, the 2017 NEKST is adding new formats. The
two-day conference will feature traditional paper presentations, workshop
sessions for dissertation chapters and articles, as well as
professionalization workshops. We will deepen our interdisciplinary
discussion by hosting prominent Korean studies scholars as Faculty Mentors
to promote collaboration and discussion. This year, we are pleased to
welcome:

*Professor Charles Kim *
(Department of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison)

*Professor Pil-Ho Kim *
(Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Ohio State University)

Graduate students (MA or PhD) from universities in any country are eligible
to apply. The deadline for submissions is *January 30, 2017.* Please submit
a 250-word abstract via our online application form
<https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=2017nekst>. There are two formats
available:

*1. Paper presentation:*
For all current graduate students who seek to share their research in an
oral presentation with commentary from a faculty member, we are planning
multiple formats that are geared toward diverse disciplines as well as
styles of presentation. If accepted, completed papers will be due by *April
28*.

*2. Chapter or article: *
For advanced graduate students who would like feedback on dissertation
chapters or pre-submission journal articles from Korean specialists outside
their own field. Faculty Mentors and participants in the conference will
join for intensive discussion on pre-circulated manuscripts. If accepted,
completed papers will be due by *April 14*.
