Opportunity: Site visit to Korea
by Vicky Baker

Dear list members,

Scholars from the project “From the Ground Up: Buddhism and East Asian
Religions” (frogbear.org [1]) will visit several sites in East Asia this
summer and welcome participation from colleagues and students. A limited
number of seats are still available, and participation is free, however
participants are expected to arrange their own travel to the field sites.

Cluster 3.3 Texts in Statues [2], will hold its first field-visit to Korea
this August 11-16th, 2017. The visit will begin with a symposium in Seoul on
August 11-12th and then a field-visit from August 13-August 15 (with
participants departing on the 16th). The two-day symposium will take place at
Ewha Woman’s University.

There is an impressive lineup of key scholars from Korea participating who
have done research on the interring of things inside of Buddhist statuary.
During the symposium portion of the program, there will be a performance of
the eye-opening ceremony and have a Q&A session with the monk who officiated
it. The monk Gyeong'am is the most authoritative figure in contemporary
點眼儀式 that includes making 腹藏 and has agreed to discuss this
ritual and all the objects they prepare for the interment with us. For the
field trip, we will visit monasteries in local towns and cities that include
temples or museums with statues that include “pokchang" objects. The
曹溪宗總務院 is now checking the monasteries to visit, possibly the
月精寺, 松廣寺, 修德寺, 把溪寺. This should be a fruitful first
part of this cluster, with a nice combination of academic engagement (the
ability to become informed of the current scholarship on “pokchang” in
Korea which will allow us to begin to compile a comprehensive list of all
known images and their contents), and also the opportunity to discuss the
actual ritual of interring objects and discuss the practice with a monk who
has been actively involved with this ritual.

To apply for registration, please send a note explaining why you are
interested, and a copy of your CV to *frogbear.project at ubc.ca [3]* by *April
24, 2017. *
