The University of Michigan Library and Asia Library are pleased to announce
an upcoming workshop on Korean Data Services. This 2-day workshop will take
place at the University of Michigan Library, November 15-16, 2017.

As the demands for data resources in the fields of Korean studies and
digital scholarship have increased, Korean studies librarians and East
Asian studies librarians have been faced with challenges in providing
effective data services to users because of the complexity of the data,
copyright laws, license agreements, language barriers, and different data
sharing cultures across countries. In this workshop, a group of presenters
consisting of East Asian studies specialists, data specialists, and guest
instructors will help the workshop attendees to recognize and use reliable
data resources, enhance their capabilities to collaborate with data
librarians at their home institutions, and provide effective data
consultation services to their patrons.

The 2017 Workshop on Korean Data Services is a two-day in-depth data
services boot camp for (but not limited to) Korean studies librarians, East
Asian studies librarians, and Korean studies researchers in North America.
In this workshop, attendees will gain hands-on experience with Korean
spatial and numeric data and GIS data, particularly those data provided by
KOSSDA (Korean Social Science Data Archive) and KOSIS (Korean Statistical
Information Service). Also they will learn about reliable data sources
related to Korea, China, and Japan from international governmental
organizations, East Asian government agencies, and commercial vendors.

All participants are cordially invited to attend The 2017 Perspectives on
Contemporary Korea Conference
<http://www.ii.umich.edu/ncks/news-events/events/conferences---symposia.html>,
which will be hosted by the Nam Center for Korean Studies
<http://www.ii.umich.edu/ncks> immediately following the data workshop, on
November 17-18. This year’s conference is entitled “The Future is Now:
South Korean Paradigms for Engagement.”
