*Mapping Social Change in Contemporary South Korea Conference* November
17-18, 2017

University of Michigan Nam Center for Korean Studies is pleased to announce
that the 7th Perspectives on Contemporary Korea conference will be offering
grants of up to $750 each to 15 scholars for travel to Ann Arbor, MI to
attend "The Future Is Now" in celebration of the Center’s 10th anniversary.

*The Future is Now *conference will feature of a series of innovative,
border-crossing and pragmatic conversations about the past, present and
future of South Korean society across the domains of education, politics,
economy, culture, regional relationships, and law.

The keynote address will be given by *KANG Ilwon, *Korean Constitutional
Court Justice and U-M alumnus.

This year's conference will also feature the following invited speakers:

   - *Seth Andrew*, Founder, Democracy Prep Public Schools & Former Senior
   Advisor on STEM Education, Education Technology, and Civic Engagement in
   the Office of the President,  USA
   - *Jennifer Chun*, Associate Professor, Sociology, University of Toronto

   - *Judy Han*, Assistant Professor, Geography, UCLA

*Travel Grants of up to $750 USD will be offered to 15 scholars with
research interests related to Korea. *

*Eligibility:*
Recipients should be faculty or graduate students at an institution of
higher learning. Applicants should plan to attend the entire conference and
participate in the substantive Q&A portion of each panel. Applications will
be evaluated on a competitive basis and special consideration will be given
to applicants from the Midwest, particularly those in the Big Ten Academic
Alliance. However, we encourage scholars from all institutions interested
in participating in this landmark conference to apply, and awards will not
be limited to scholars from a specific geographic area.

In addition to general applicant information, an itemized list of expenses
and a brief statement of interest should be provided.

Please note the following details that may guide your planning
for travel to Ann Arbor so that you can estimate your expenses more
accurately for the application. Please note that all award recipients will
be responsible for making all of their own travel reservations and that the
grant will cover transportation and lodging expenses only.

AIRPORT The closest major airport is Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW).

LODGING

Hotels
within walking distance of the conference venue are limited and priced
accordingly. However, there are many hotels within 5 miles of campus and
both public, taxis, and ride share options are available. If sufficient
interest can be determined, the Center may arrange for a block of hotel
rooms at a discounted rate. A list of accepted grant recipients will be
circulated after the notification period so that attendees can contact each
other to make shared accommodation arrangements.

MEALS Breakfast and lunch on the days of the conference will be provided by
the Center. Other meals and incidentals will be the responsibility of the
recipient and are not allowable expenses for the travel grant.
