------------------------------

Dr Graham will begin by outlining his key arguments from his most recent
publication on the North Korean nuclear crisis, “Trump, Kim and the North
Korean Nuclear Missile Melodrama” (Lowy Institute, May 2018). He will
include an update on the diplomatic situation since the Kim-Trump summit
took place in Singapore, in June, assessing progress on the main issue, as
well as the ongoing inter-Korean engagement process, and wider implications
for the US-South Korean alliance and security in Northeast Asia. Graham
will also offer a comparative perspective on the DPRK, as it is viewed by
its neighbours: South Korea, China and Japan, drawing from his short essay
from the Nikkei Asia Review (“North Korea’s Historical Hall of Mirrors”, 11
May 2017). Finally, Graham will offer some reflections on his experiences
as a diplomat regularly visiting the DPRK between 2004 and 2009.
