Dear Korean Studies colleagues,

Call for Papers

11th Biennial KSAA Conference
4-6 December, 2019

"Korea in the Age of Precarity and Global Success"

The Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA) invites abstracts and panel proposals from scholars, practitioners, early career researchers and postgraduate students for the Eleventh Biennial KSAA Conference, to be held on December 4-6th 2019 at the University of Western Australia, Perth.

The 2019 conference theme is "Korea in the Age of Precarity and Global Success." It seeks to highlight that the Korean peninsula has witnessed one of the greatest economic and cultural success stories of recent times, while also symbolizing political and social precarity in the age of neoliberal globalisation and challenges to liberal democracies. While we welcome papers on any Korean Studies topic, abstracts closely related to the conference theme will be considered for an edited interdisciplinary volume on Korea as a physical and symbolic site to examine how global cultural, technological, political, social and even linguistic fluidities call for further investigation and theorisation of transnationalism and globalisation. The organisers are particularly keen to receive proposals on topics that address the following or closely related issues in the Korean context:

* Shifting definitions of social success

*       Social precarity and ageing

* Precarity and success in the age of multiculturalism

* Migration and diasporas: successes and challenges

* How success is defined in the age of political and social precarities

* Successful strategies for international engagement by 'global Korea'

* Employment, social security and precarious lives

* Korean business and economy in the age of global precarity and success

* Religion in the age of precarity

* Korean peninsula in the age of globalisation, transnational flows and new precarities

* Security, risk and geopolitics of precarity

* Successes and future challenges for global Korean language education and linguistics

* Korean literature and translation as global success

* Precarity and success in Korean popular culture and film

*       Precarious sexualities

* Precarious bodies, wellbeing and beauty

* Society and change in North Korea

* North Korea in the age of sanctions

* Historical antecedents as contexts for contemporary realities

* Precarity and success in the past: historical and archeological considerations

In addition to above topics, there will be two round table sessions on Korean language policy & education and Korean Studies pedagogies in Australasia.

All presentations should be in English, and will be limited to 20 minutes to leave time for discussion.
