All are welcome to attend the following seminar at 4pm on Monday 24th June,
at the Research Institute of Korean Studies, Korea University, Seoul. The
lecture will be given by Pony Chung Research Fellow Dr Jennifer Hough
(Korea University/SOAS) and it will consider the relationship between North
Korean migrants/refugees and South Koreans from a linguistic perspective.

본 연구는 한국에 거주하는 북한 탈북민과 남한 사람들의 관계를 언어적 관점에서 분석한다. 본 연구는 21개월의 현장조사와 32명의
면접을 통해서 진행되었다. 1953년부터 지금까지 32,000명 이상의 북한 탈북민이 한국으로 이주했으나, 이들은 한국에 정착하면서
많은 어려움과 편견에 직면하고 있다.  같은 한국어를 사용하지만 많은 탈북민들은 북한 사투리 억양과 생소한 단어 때문에 차별을
경험한다.  본 연구는 ‘북한말’과 ‘남한말’에서 나타나는 언어적 차이를 소개하고, 나아가 북한말과 관련된 부정적인 이미지에 대해
설명한다. 남한으로 이주한 탈북민들은 언어적인 스트레스를 겪고 있을 뿐만 아니라 남한식 표현을 사용해야 한다는 부담감을 느끼고 있다.
뿐만 아니라 남한 사람들에게는 북한 사투리와 조선족 사투리가 비슷하게 들린다는 점 때문에 탈북민들은 조선족의 부정적인 이미지를 피해야
한다는 추가적인 문제까지 직면하고 있다.
