Between nostalgia and nausea: Attitudes towards the past in contemporary Korea

Carousel lecture — Call for proposals

The Korean section of the Department of Asian Studies at Palacky University Olomouc, Czech Republic, is organizing a lecture series (constituting one “carousel lecture”) for the spring/summer semester of 2020. We envisage having seven different experts present research-based teaching. The subject area is defined by the title Between nostalgia and nausea: Attitudes towards the past in contemporary Korea. Lecturers are asked to base their presentations mainly on their own academic research. Introductory knowledge about Korea should be imparted in a calculated fashion en passant, akin to how a good historical novel might teach the basics of a period’s conflicts simply “by the way.”
We hope to receive many interesting proposals by scholars and university teachers to whom our concept appeals. Deadline for proposals is January 5, 2020. Proposals should comprise an abstract of 300 words and a short bio of up to 100 words, to be sent to andreas.schirmer at upol.cz<mailto:andreas.schirmer at upol.cz>.
Those selected will be required to deliver, no more than four weeks after the date of their lecture, an essay (3000–4000 words) summarizing the main content of their talk. All essays will be published online as an open-access resource on our website (for examples see http://seed.upol.cz/activities/carousel-lecture/essays/). In their essay, lecturers should outline their main points in an accessible, reader-friendly way, and may also offer observations and speculations from work-in-progress.
The lectures and essays will form a centerpiece of a Seed Program for Korean Studies project, for which Palacky University Olomouc has received a grant from the Korean Studies Promotion Service (Academy of Korean Studies).

Practical matters

Time/Dates: The lectures take place at a fixed time, Fridays 9:45–13:00 (teaching time 180 minutes). Dates in 2020 are: February 28, March 6, March 13, March 20, April 3, April 17, April 24.

Finances:
A) Travel costs: We can cover travel costs (flight and/or train) within our budget, which allows an average of 400 Euros per speaker. In order to guarantee a fair distribution of reimbursements, based on actual expenses, we will agree the exact subsidy amount with selected participants based on their foreseeable expenses. Upon your arrival, we will proceed with the transfer of this sum to your account.
B) Accommodation: We will make reservations and cover costs in a conveniently located 4-star hotel. For administrative reasons, guests will need to settle the hotel bill upfront, but this sum will be reimbursed together with the agreed amount for travel costs.
C) Honorarium: The honorarium is 500 Euros. This will be paid after delivery of the essay (see above), as we rely on a tangible output for our funders.

Further details: From an administrative point of view, every speaker will cover two lecture units (90 minutes each, with a break in between), so that the carousel lecture is equivalent in total to one semester-long class of weekly 90-minute lectures. Students take an exam at the end of the semester, but exams and assessment are handled by the project director. The carousel lecture does not require registration and will be open (in theory) to the general public, in compliance with university laws.
