Instructional Professor (open rank) in Modern Korean Language

Position Description
The Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago seeks an experienced teacher of Korean language to help grow its existing program. We invite applications for a position as an Instructional Professor (open rank) in modern Korean language. The position begins in academic year 2020-21, with a start date of September 1, 2020. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The initial appointment will be for one year, with review and progression schedule determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.
Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching consists of six language courses across three quarters at all levels of the language. Service duties may include training of course assistants; outreach and cultural activities; or overseeing placement in the Korean program.
Qualifications
Applicants are required to have at least one year of previous language teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, preferably at a North American institution. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required. A Ph.D. in a related field is desirable. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language proficiency for teaching Korean in a university context, e.g. through an ACTFL-certified result at the Superior level or higher, or through receipt of an advanced degree earned in a Korean-language context.

This position is contingent upon budgetary approval. The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.
