Dear all,

We are
pleased to announce the publication of Volume 11, Number 2 of the Journal of
Korean Religions. This fall’s issue is a special topic issue, entitled, “Reformulating
the Historiography of Late Chosŏn Buddhism” and is guest edited by Sung-Eun
Thomas Kim. The issue includes four articles on the topic: “Increased Temple Publication of
Buddhist Texts in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries: Reading the
Political and Cultural Significance of the Monastic Community”, by Son Sŏngpil; “The Chosŏn Gentry Sponsorship of Buddhist Temple Works: Insights from the
Records of Late-Chosŏn Donor Ledgers” by Sung-Eun Thomas Kim; “Beyond the Pro- or
Anti-Buddhist Interpretations of State Governance: An Alternate Reason for the
Vernacular Translations of Sinitic Buddhist Texts in Fifteenth-Century Chosŏn
Korea” by Kim Kijong; and “Formation of “Chosŏn Buddhist
Tradition: Dharma Lineage and the Monastic Curriculum from a Synchronic and
Diachronic Perspective” by Kim Yongtae”. In addition, the issue
features a research article by Maya Stiller, “Beyond Singular Tradition: ‘Buddhist’
Pilgrimage Sites in Late Chosŏn Korea” and a review of Uri Kaplan’s “Buddhist
Apologetics in East Asia: Countering the Neo-Confucian Critiques in the Hufa
lun and the Yusŏk chirŭi non” by A. Charles Muller. The journal is available online through Project Muse https://muse.jhu.edu/issue/43300

The Journal of Korean Religions
is the only English-language academic journal dedicated to the study of Korean
religions. The publication aims to stimulate interest in and research on Korean
religions across a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
Launched in 2010 by the Institute for the Study of Religion at Sogang
University in Korea, the journal is peer-reviewed and published twice yearly,
in April and October.

We are now
accepting scholarly contributions dedicated to the study of Korean religions.
We especially welcome special topic and guest edited volumes. Prospective
manuscripts, book reviews, and questions can be directed to the managing editor
at <a href="mailto:journalkr at sogang.ac.kr">journalkr at sogang.ac.kr

Sincerely,

Dr. Brendan
Wright
