안녕하세요, <성균관대 BK21 혁신ㆍ공유ㆍ정의 지향의 한국어문학 교육연구단>에서 국내외의 여러 문화연구자 여러분들에게 인사드립니다.
저희 사업단은 새로운 국제 문화연구 모임을 결성하기로 하고 첫 번째 국제학술회의를 오는 2021년 1월 29일과 30일에 엽니다.


  코로나19 사태는 세계적으로 수많은 인간의 죽음과 디스토피아적 상황을 초래하고 있습니다. 혐오와 불평등이 더욱 깊고 넓게
번져갑니다. ‘다시 예전의 세계로 돌아갈 수 없다’는 한탄(환호?)이 나오는 와중에, 국가들은 우왕좌왕하며 생명공학과 디지털기술에
기대려하지만 적절한 대처를 하지 못하고 있습니다.

  한편 이런 상황은 기술문화의 지배를 확장하고 기존 대학과 교육의 위기 상황을 가속화합니다. 또 이는 ‘문화연구’ 뿐 아니라 모든
인문사회과학의 위치 재조정을 요구합니다. 그 요구의 성격은 때로는 매우 급진적이고 자본의 논리에 편승한 것이어서, 많은 연구자들은 길을
잃고 있습니다.


  이에 이번 학술대회의 큰 제목을 “포스트 코로나(시대), 포스트 문화연구”로 정하고 서로 연관된 논의를 하려 합니다.

  첫째, ‘문화연구’의 방법에 관한 것입니다. ‘문화연구’는 가장 종합적이고 실천적인 학문이라지만, 제도적 위기와 방법적 곤란에 대한
불안정함은 불식되지 않고 있습니다. 한국에서의 문화연구의 현재를 점검하는 동시에 초국적 문화연구의 의제와 방법에 대한 모색을 공유하는
시간을 가져보려 합니다. 이를 위해 이 학술회의의 제1, 제2세션에서는 ‘문화정치경제’, 페미니즘/퀴어 이론, 식민주의, 디지털 문화,
중국 등을 소재로써 문화연구가 처한 벽과 갈 길에 대해 묻고자 합니다. ‘기호 해독’과 ‘재현 분석’이라는 고전적(?) 문화연구의
논제가 여전히 유효한지, ‘정동적 전환’과 ‘정치경제학적 전환’의 슬로건은 어떤 구체적 현실과 만나고 있는지? 또한 ‘문화연구’가
‘정체성의 정치’를 넘어 새로운 문화정치에 해석하고 개입할 수 있는 방법으로 기능하고 있는지? 발표 제목과 토론자들의 면모를 보셔도
알겠지만 제1세션과 제2세션은 뜨겁고 깊은 논의가 오가는 장이 될 것입니다.

  코로나 시대는 ‘살게 하는 권력 / 죽게 만드는 권력으로서의 국가’라는 푸코의 고전적 명제와 시민적 ‘자유’와 공동체의 윤리의
문제를 다시 묻게 했습니다. 1월 30일에 열리는 제4세션에서 이 문제에 직면해보고자 합니다. 세계적으로 이름난 국가론 연구자이자
‘문화정치경제(론)’의 제안자인 영국 랭커스터대학의 밥 제솝과 나이링섬 교수, 그리고 중국의 문화연구를 이끄는 상하이대학의 왕샤오밍
교수가 각각 영국과 중국의 상황에 기초하여 ‘팬데믹 시대의 국가와 시민’이라는 주제로 발제해주실 것입니다. 이외에도 차세대
문화연구자들이 참여하는 세션에서 초국적 영화 수용, 여성의 글쓰기, 게이커뮤니티 등을 소재로 한 다양한 발표가 준비되어 있으니 많은
관심과 성원을 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다.

= Greetings

Greetings from “BK21 Project: Education and Research Group of Korean
Language and Literature for Innovation, Commons, and Justice, Sungkyunkwan
University” to many researchers at home and abroad. Our Group has decided
to form a new international research group for cultural studies and will
hold its first international conference on Saturday, January 29, and
Sunday, January 30, 2021.

The COVID-19 outbreak is causing numerous human deaths and dystopian
situations. Hate and inequality spread deeper and wider in almost every
country. In the midst of lamentations (or cheers) that “we cannot go back
to the old world,” countries are lean on biotechnology and digital
technology to cope with it, but they are confused and unable to find a way
to stop death and poverty.
Meanwhile, this situation expands the dominance of technology culture and
accelerates the crisis upon which existing universities and education are
facing. This also calls for repositioning not only cultural studies but
also all humanities and social sciences. The nature of the demands is
sometimes very radical and riding on the logic of capitalism, which has
been puzzling many researchers and educators.

Therefore, we will set the big title of this conference as “Post Corona
(Era), Post Cultural Studies” ad discuss related matters.
First of all, it is about the method of cultural studies. Cultural studies
is considered the most comprehensive and practical discipline, but the
instability about institutional crisis and methodological difficulties has
not been dispelled. Therefore, in this conference, we will take time to
review the current status of Korean cultural studies and to share the
agenda and method of transnational cultural studies. To this end, in the
1st and 2nd Sessions of this Conference, we would like to ask about the
barriers encountered by cultural studies and the way to go, dealing with
the topics on cultural and political economy, feminism/queer theory,
colonialism, digital culture, and China. Is the classical(?) thesis of
cultural studies such as deciphering signs and representation analysis
still valid, and what concrete reality do the slogans of affective
transformation and political-economic transformation meet? Also, is
cultural studies functioning as a way to interpret and intervene in new
cultural politics as well as politics of identity? As you can sense from
the presentation titles and the names of the panels, the 1st and 2nd
Sessions will be forums for intense and in-depth discussion.
The Corona Era has prompted us to reconsider Foucault’s classic proposition
of the state as a power to foster life / to take life and the matter of
civic freedom and community ethics. The 4th Session on January 30th will
offer an opportunity to confront this matter. Professors Bob Jessop and
Ngai-Ling Sum of Lancaster University in England, the world-renowned
researchers of state theory and proposition of cultural political economy
(theory), and Professor Wang Xiaoming of Shanghai University, the leader of
cultural studies in China, will give presentations under the theme of
“State and Civil Society in the Pandemic Era”based on the situation in the
UK and China, respectively. In addition, as various presentations on the
subject of transnational film reception, women's writing, and gay community
are prepared in sessions where next-generation cultural studies researchers
participate, we ask for your kind interest and support. Thank you.
