*Post-doctoral Researcher, ‘Aftermath’ Project
Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford
Grade 7: £32,817 - £40,322 per annum*
The post holder will be a member of the European Research Council
Project, “Aftermath of the East Asian War of 1592-1598” (no. 758347),
which is directed by Prof. Rebekah Clements and hosted by the Autonomous
University of Barcelona together with the University of Oxford.
Reporting directly to Dr James Lewis at the University of Oxford, the
post holder will be responsible for carrying out research on the social
or economic history of post-Imjin Korea, taking into account the Imjin
War and its aftermath in historical context. They will also provide
guidance to junior members of the research group including research
assistants, PhD students, and/or project volunteers. The post holder
will be based in Oxford and will connect remotely with other members of
the Aftermath project who are based in Barcelona and other locations
worldwide.
You will have a relevant doctorate or equivalent, together with relevant
experience, demonstrable expertise in any aspect of the economic and
social history of Chosŏn Korea, preferably of the Late Chosŏn period
(ca. 1600 – 1870), and a clear interest in the effects of the Imjin War.
The successful candidate will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in
the discipline to work within established research programmes
(particularly, the ability to use Classical Chinese and Modern Korean
for research), native or near-native Korean language skills, and an
ability to manage academic research. You will also have previous
experience of contributing to publications/presentations, an ability to
contribute ideas for new research projects, and excellent communication
skills as defined by an excellent command of English, including academic
English.
This position is based in central Oxford. This is a full-time,
fixed-term position for 2 years, from 1 November 2021 or as soon as
possible thereafter.
