 *New webinar series announcement: North Korea in the World Series on North
Korea's historical and contemporary relations with the Global South*

The North Korea in the World Webinar Series will examine North Korea’s
historical and contemporary relations with countries in the Global South. A
joint initiative of the National Committee on North Korea
<http://www.ncnk.org> and the East-West Center in Washington
<https://www.eastwestcenter.org/>, the North Korea in the World (
www.NorthKoreaintheWorld.org) project collects and curates information and
data on North Korea’s external economic and diplomatic relations.

Each seminar will take place on Zoom via its Webinar platform. All seminars
will be on-the-record, live streamed to YouTube, and recorded on Zoom to be
made available after the seminar on YouTube

In March 2021, North Korea severed diplomatic relations with Malaysia,
breaking ties with a country that until a few years previously had been on
friendly terms with Pyongyang. In this North Korea in the World webinar,
we’ll talk with Dr. Chiew-Ping Hoo about the history of North Korea’s
relations with Malaysia, and the scope of the country’s relationship in
recent years. The discussion will take a close look at the Kim Jong Nam
assassination and its aftermath, and look at how it changed the scope of
this relationship, culminating with Malaysia’s 2021 extradition of a DPRK
businessman to the US and Pyongyang’s subsequent decision to cut diplomatic
ties.

This webinar will examine the broad arc of relations between North Korea
and Vietnam,beginning with Pyongyang’s relations with Hanoi during
Vietnam’s “American War” and the impact that Hanoi’s victory in that
conflict had on North Korea. It will discuss the changing scope of the
North Korea-Vietnam relationship in the post-Cold War era, and the
relevance(or lack of relevance) of Vietnam’s Doi Moi reforms to *North
Korea. Finally, it will assess contemporary relations between the countries
in light of contemporary geopolitics and the2019 Hanoi summit meeting
between the U.S. and North Korea.*

context of its broader involvement in the Middle East, from the 1967 and
1973 wars with Israel to Pyongyang’s contemporary support for the Assad

relationship with Damascus fits into the broader context of North Korea’s
engagement with the Middle East, and examine the continuing value the
relationship has for both countries.

America and the Caribbean, with a particular focus on Guyana, where the
socialist regime of Forbes Burnham was heavily influenced by Kim Il Sung’s

development of this little-known relationship, and ask what lasting impact
it may have had.

This webinar will look at North Korea’s historical involvement in
anti-colonial and anti-Apartheid movements in southern Africa, looking
particularly at its support for Namibianindependence. The discussion will
then turn to North Korea’s continuing economic andmilitary ties, and its
“statue diplomacy” with Namibia and other countries in the region,
lookingat whether UN sanctions have largely brought these relations to a
close.

May 12:  Beyond the Hermit Kingdom: North Korea and the Postcolonial World

This webinar, a partnership between the East-West Center in Washington and
National Committee on North Korea, will discuss the long arc of North
Korea’s engagement with Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and
Southeast Asia, beginning with Pyongyang’s early involvement in the
Non-Aligned Movement and its support for various revolutionary and
anti-imperialist causes. The discussion will highlight key turning points
as North Korea’s activities with countries in the “Global South” became
less about ideological affinity and more transactional, and will ask what
significance these relationships continue to have.
