*SPEAKER*: *KIM HONG-MO*



Kim Hong-mo is a graphic novelist artist living in Jeju Island, South
Korea. He will talk about his new cartoon book, *The Hall* (Changbi, 2021),
drawn based on the story of Kim Dong-su who is known as a hero who rescued
passengers during the Sewol Ferry Disaster but suffered severe trauma. He
published numerous cartoon books dealing with various social and political
issues including *Yongsan Where I lived* (2010), *People Who Cannot Leave*
(2012), *Red Pills: About What We Believe We Know* (2015), *The Island of
Gods* (2017), a webtoon about the mythology of Jeju, *Small Room* (2018)
from his experience in prison, *Bitchang* (2020) about the Jeju 4.3
Uprising, and most recently *Hall: Story of the Survivor of the Sewol Ferry
Disaster* (2021).

This event is organized by Hong KAL (the Department of Visual Art and Art
History at York), translated by Minjeong Kim. This virtual event is
co-presented by the Sewol Toronto and the Korean office for Research and
Education (KORE) at York University which is funded by the Academy of
Korean Studies.
