He was not only a great scholar interested in many different fields, most importantly he was of a warm personality, open to start scholarly exchange with anyone meeting or contacting him. I am among the lucky ones to have benefitted from his keen interest in deep discussions, and I cannot express the loss I feel

It is with a sad heart that I must announce the passing today of Gari Ledyard. Gari, King Sejong Professor Emeritus of Korean History at Columbia University and my former advisor, was one of the pioneers of Korean Studies. He will be deeply missed.



I can provide more information soon, but I wanted to get the word out to his friends and colleagues.
