Abstract:
Korea, with climate zones ranging from sub-arctic at the top of Mt. Paektu
to sub-tropical on Jeju Island in the South, is a hotspot of biodiversity.
Located in the centre of the East Asian -Australasian Flyway, 90 percent of
its bird population is migratory, making for a great diversity. While South
Korean biodiversity suffered from tremendous losses due to rapid
development, and a similar fate was in store for the Chinese East Coast and
Japan, North Korea became extremely important for certain species due to
backward agriculture and much slower development, in particular reclamation
of tidal flats. This presentation looks at the status of biodiversity in
North Korea, recent advances in nature preservation and possibilities for
international and inter-Korean cooperation.

About the Speaker:
Dr Bernhard Seliger has been the representative of the Hanns Seidel
Foundation in Korea since 2002. He frequently travels to North Korea,
implementing capacity-building projects, among others in forestry and

Studies and Seoul National University and earned a habilitation in
economics at the University of Witten-Herdecke (2007) and a doctorate Kiel
