Aloha,

We are the graduate assistant conference planners for the upcoming Asian
Studies Graduate Student Conference being held in-person at the University
of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus on April 27–28, 2023. Our keynote speakers this
year are Dr. Engseng Ho and Dr. Barbara Watson Andaya.

We seek your kind assistance in helping us publicize our call for papers on
your regular newsletters and blogs, up until February 2023. We would also
be very thankful if you could also forward this to any relevant
departments, centers, institutes, or colleagues, who are able to reach out
to different graduate students currently working on Asia.

We have included the blurb below that you can include in your emails,
newsletters, websites and/or blogs, and also a poster image, if your
platforms allow for it. Mahalo nui loa for your help, and we appreciate any
assistance you can provide. Do let us know if you have any questions!

*CALL FOR PAPERS*

"Intersecting Asias: Reflections on Connections and Mobility*": *34th Asian
Studies Graduate Student Conference at the University of Hawai‘i at
Mānoa, *April
27–28, 2023*

The School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) and the Department of Asian
Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM) invites proposals for
papers, performances, and panels that seek to move beyond the ‘traditional’
regions of Asia for the 34th annual Asian Studies Graduate Student
Conference, held in-person at the Center for Korean Studies on the UHM
campus in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, on April 27–28, 2023.

Beyond the constructed and narrow boundaries of South, Southeast, West,
Central, and East Asia, the conference presents participants with the
opportunity to think particularly about the movements of peoples, ideas,
forms, and technologies across space and time through the perspective of
Inter-Asia. How can historical and/or contemporary understandings of
Asia(s) be enriched when one moves beyond established geographical and
regional limits? How can networks be established, thickened, broken, and
re-established again? Why might such networks be important?

Submissions from across different disciplines—whether rooted in one
specific region of Asia or focused on Inter-Asia theme from the outset—are
welcomed, but all papers should engage in some way with the wider
implications of mobility across space and time. The definition of Asia is
taken to be as expansive as possible, with a stress on connections and
networks rather than clearly defined boundaries.

Numerous "Best Paper" Prizes to be won!

Applicants should submit a *250-300 word abstract by January 25, 2023,* 11.59PM
(HST). Visit https://spasgraduateconference2023.wordpress.com/ for more
information!
