Dear all,

“Beyond the Workbench: The Rise of the Cultural Industry in South Korea”

is the title of our upcoming Zoom-talk at the IN-EAST Research Forum at the University of Duisburg-Essen

delivered by Diana Schüler and Werner Pascha (University of Duisburg-Essen)

on Wednesday, January 19, 17:00 - 18:00 (CET - Paris, Berlin, Duisburg time).

Abstract
Korean TV series enjoy great popularity in Japan, Southeast Asia and beyond. Success isn't limited to film or TV either: Korean pop music (K-Pop) is captivating youthful listeners in East and West, and Korean online games are also among the leading offerings worldwide. The significance of the success of the cultural industries for Korea goes far beyond that of any economic sector. In particular, three factors are responsible for this, which not only make the phenomenon to be examined interesting for Korea itself, but also promise lessons for other economies. Based on an economist perspective, this presentation’s key questions relate to the factors that led to the emergence and success of the culture industries in Korea, and also addresses what follows from this for the significance of these developments.
