Dr Sung-Young Kim from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia will talk about Korea’s energy transition and its implications for the broader shifts in the energy industry currently. Abstract and bio, as well as a poster are below.

Summary
Why are some countries more successful in racing ahead in the new global economic battleground over smart and green economy than others? In this talk, I present findings from an ongoing research project examining the Korean, Taiwanese and Singaporean governments’ efforts to promote smarter, greener and stronger energy infrastructure – as developmental platforms to drive new technological and export capabilities. I show that competitive advantage in the new digital economy is highly dependent on the state’s ability to craft new public and private linkages in the form of ‘hybridized industrial ecosystems’. Therefore, the success of Korean and Australian initiatives to build new green industries such as ‘green hydrogen’ will be dependent on building the institutional capacity to leverage (not displace) the nation’s innovation champions.

Presenter Bio
Dr Sung-Young Kim is Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Politics & International Relations at the Macquarie School of Social Sciences, Macquarie University. His research is on the role of governments in building green technology industries in East Asia. He is one of the Chief Investigators on an Australia Research Council Discovery Project examining clean energy transitions in Korea and China. He is Regional Editor (Korea) for Asian Studies Review and on the Executive Committees of the Australian Political Studies Association (APSA) and the Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA). His work has appeared in Energy Policy (2021), Journal of Environment and Development (2021), Review of International Political Economy (2012, 2019), New Political Economy (2012, 2020), Global Policy (2013), Politics & Society (2015), Review of Evolutionary Political Economy (2022), and The Asia-Pacific Journal (2016).
