Prof. Young Ick Lew passed away on July 26, 2023.
Here is the obituary by his second son Daniel Lew:

 Young Ick Lew, 87, eminent historian of Korean studies, passed away on July 26 in Seoul, Korea.  He graduated from Seoul National University and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in History and East Asian Languages.  During his professional career, he taught at numerous universities, including Yonsei University, Hallym University, Korea University, and the University of Houston.  More recently, he was the head of the National Institute of Korean History.  As the author of many books and articles on Korean history, his work on Syngman Rhee was particularly notable, including his book, "The Making of the First President: Syngman Rhee's Quest for Independence."  He received many awards throughout his illustrious career, including the Kyung-Ahm Prize in Arts and Sciences in 2006 for his academic contributions.   He is sorely missed by his family, friends, and colleagues who always respected his passion for teaching Korean history.
