Dear Colleagues,

could you please share the below announcement of the international symposium on the Nak Chung Thun Archive and Global Korean Literature? This USC (University of Southern California) event will be of interest for researchers of modern Korean literature and Korean American literature. Here's a brief intro to Thun and his literary archive:

Nak Chung Thun (1875-1953) immigrated to California via Hawaii in 1907, settling in Riverside and working as a laborer for most of his life. Until his passing in 1953, Thun privately wrote epic fiction and short stories in his native tongue, leaving behind a literary state that is today a precious discovery for both Korean and Korean American literary historians. The Thun Archive became part of the collections of USC's East Asian Library in 2004. Comprised of three long novels, six short stories, and six essays, the Archive is of intrinsic literary interest and also offers an unprecedented window into the experience of Korean immigrants in Southern California at the beginning of the 20th century.

The symposium is timed with the publication of the second volume of materials drawn from the archive, Thun's alternate history novel 홍중래전. (For the first volume of Thun's selected short stories and essays, see 구제적 강도 https://www.aladin.co.kr/shop/wproduct.aspx?ItemId=243676354.) The event will feature all the researchers who have been participating in this archival excavation project and will also introduce the first English translation of Thun's work.
