[KS] Korean Studies Symposium in 2024: Korea at the Crossroads at Binghamton University

Dear Friends of the Center for Korean Studies,

 

The Center for Korean Studies at Binghamton University will host the Korean
Studies Symposium in 2024: Korea at the Crossroads on Friday, April 12 at
2:00 PM in Alpern Conference Room (LN 2200) at Binghamton University.

 

Walden Bello (International Adjunct of Sociology, Binghamton University)
will deliver a talk, "The Perils of Semi-Sovereignty," in the Opening
Plenary Session and Suzy Lee (Assistant Professor of Human Development,
Binghamton University) will deliver a talk, "Temporary Measures: Migrant
Workers and the Developmental State in South Korea," in the Closing Plenary
Session.

2:00 pm Welcoming Remark, Donald E. Hall (Provost, Binghamton University)

 

2:10-3:00 pm Opening Plenary Session

Walden Bello (Sociology, Binghamton University), "The Perils of
Semi-Sovereignty"

 

3:10-4:30 pm Graduate Student Session

Man Joong Kim (History), "Archetype and Adaptation: The Transition of
Architectural Pedagogy in the U.S. and Its Influence on South Korean
Architecture and Urban Planning during the Cold War"

Julia Eggleston (Comparative Literature), "Unstable Time and Space: Yi Sang
in Translation"

Hyeonseo Lee (Sociology), "The Historical Institutional Conditions of the
Professional Managerial Class of Science in Korea: The Establishment of KIST
under U.S. Imperialism in the 1960s"

 

4:40-5:30 pm Closing Plenary Session

Suzy Lee (Human Development, Binghamton), "Temporary Measures: Migrant
Workers and the Developmental State in South Korea"

 

5:30 pm Closing Remark, Sungdai Cho (Director, Center for Korean Studies,
Binghamton University)
