Hello all,
My name is Ronan O'Connell, I'm a journalist and photographer (
www.ronanoconnell.com/about) writing a book for a US publisher about the
unique ways cultures around the world deal with loss and grief.
I'm wondering if any of you are familiar with this topic, or could
recommend a Korean academic I could contact about this topic?
For this book, I'm travelling to 20+ countries to photograph sites linked
to those customs/beliefs for dealing with loss. Such as Japan's *Garden of
Unborn Children*, which I visited after my wife and I suffered our second
miscarriage, to pray to its Shinto deity Jizo, who protects miscarried or
stillborn babies.
This was a very cathartic, illuminating experience, and inspired me to
write a book which will teach readers how cultures from Asia to Africa,
Europe, and the Americas deal with all kinds of loss - from death to
divorce, losing a job, losing your health etc.
Can anyone please recommend Korean customs/beliefs for dealing with loss or
grief, and any unique shrines, temples or other locations in South Korea
which people visit to mourn or to pray for help with processing grief?
Kind regards,
*Ronan O'Connell, journalist + photographer*
